Biography

Stefania Bariatti was born in 1956. After obtaining her law degree in 1979, she dedicated herself to an academic career, which led her in November 2002 to teach International Law at the Faculty of Law in Milan. She subsequently became first a senior associate, then a partner, and finally a consultant at the Chiomenti law firm, one of the most well-known business law firms in Italy. Since 2013, she has been a board member of Astm and president of Sias, the highway holding companies of the Beniamino Gavio group. Stefania Bariatti is the author of over 120 publications in legal journals in Italian, English, French, and German, and has held advisory roles for the Parliament and the European Commission. In December 2017, Stefania Bariatti took on (until 2020) the leadership of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena as President.

Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) is an Italian credit institution founded in 1472 in the form of a Monte di Pietà to support the underprivileged classes of the population of the city of Siena. It is the oldest bank in operation and is also considered the longest-lasting in the world.

Along with the other companies in the group, it constitutes the sixth banking group in Italy after Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit, Banco BPM, ICCREA Banca, and BPER Banca. It operates throughout Italy and in the main international markets. The group's operations, in addition to traditional banking activities, cover asset management, private banking (mutual funds, wealth management for private clients, pension funds, and life insurance), investment banking, and innovative corporate finance (project finance, private equity, and financial consulting).

Currently, the majority shareholder of the Montepaschi Group is the Italian state, which holds a total of 64.23% of the share capital, with direct participation from the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
