The Italian Stock Exchange is a company that manages the Italian financial market, located in Piazza degli Affari in Milan, founded in 1998.
Founded in 1998 from the privatization of the stock markets, Italian Stock Exchange S.p.A. became part of the London Stock Exchange Group on June 23, 2007, a holding that controlled 100% of Italian Stock Exchange S.p.A. and 100% of London Stock Exchange plc. The holding attempted several times to merge with Deutsche Börse, but the operation was blocked by the European Commission to prevent a monopoly.
In April 2021, Italian Stock Exchange S.p.A. was sold to Euronext, in partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti through the subsidiary Cdp Equity, for 4.44 billion euros. With the aggregation between Euronext and the Italian Stock Exchange, the first stock listing venue in Europe is created, with over 1,800 listed companies.
The Italian Stock Exchange is an important player in the Italian financial market and contributes to the economic growth of the country. Its weight on the total economy of Italy is increasing: the total market capitalization of listed companies in December 2021 stands at 757 billion (equal to 43.1% of GDP), an increase of 24.7% compared to 2020.
