Terna is Italy's transmission system operator (TSO) and Europe's largest independent electricity transmission system operator. The company owns and operates Italy's National Transmission Grid (NTG), the high- and extra-high-voltage infrastructure that enables the secure and reliable transmission of electricity throughout the country. As the operator of the national transmission grid, Terna does not generate electricity. Its role is to ensure that electricity is transmitted safely, efficiently and continuously from generation sources to distribution networks, guaranteeing the reliability of the power system and enabling households and businesses to access electricity at all times.
Terna manages one of Europe's largest and most advanced electricity transmission networks, comprising approximately 76,000 km of high- and extra-high-voltage power lines, 926 electrical substations and 30 cross-border interconnections. The company is supported by a workforce of approximately 7,200 professionals.
Terna's mission is to ensure the security, quality and efficiency of Italy's electricity transmission service while providing non-discriminatory access to the grid for all market participants. The company is also committed to developing the national transmission network and strengthening its integration with the European electricity system.
Listed on the Italian Stock Exchange since 23 June 2004 and included in the FTSE MIB index, Terna plays a pivotal role in enabling Italy's energy transition. Through strategic investments in grid infrastructure, digitalisation and interconnections, the company facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources, enhances the resilience of the electricity system and contributes to the achievement of Italy's and the European Union's climate and energy objectives.
