Born in 1949 in Marina di Gioiosa Ionica (RC), Rocco Commisso emigrated to the United States at the age of 12. Thanks to a scholarship, he earned a degree in Industrial Engineering and an MBA from the Graduate Business School of Columbia University. After his studies, Commisso initially worked in the financial sector before moving into the cable industry. In 1995, he founded Mediacom Communications Corporation to acquire and improve cable systems in the smaller and underserved communities of the USA. Over the past 23 years, Mediacom has become the fifth largest cable service provider in the USA. In 2017, Commisso acquired a majority stake in the New York Cosmos soccer team and in June 2019 became the owner of ACF Fiorentina.
The ACF Fiorentina, better known as Fiorentina, is an Italian football club founded in 1926 in Florence. It plays in Serie A, the top division of the Italian championship.
It has been Italian champion twice, has also won six Coppa Italia and one Italian Supercup. It was the first Italian team to win a UEFA competition, the Cup Winners' Cup in 1960-1961, as well as one of the fifteen European teams (along with Juventus, the only two Italians) to have played at least one final in the three historic and main confederation competitions.
Since 2019, the president of the football team is the Italian-American entrepreneur Rocco Commisso.
