Italo - Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori is a private Italian railway company, owned by the American investment firm Global Infrastructure Partners, that operates in the field of high-speed rail transport. The company was founded in 2006 by Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, Diego Della Valle, Gianni Punzo, and Giuseppe Sciarrone with the intention of competing with Trenitalia on Italian high-speed lines, in view of the liberalization of the railway sector in the European Union.
Italo offers high-speed rail transport services on a network that covers the main Italian cities, including Milan, Turin, Venice, Florence, Bologna, Rome, and Naples. Its fleet exceeds fifty trains, all characterized by Alstom's very high-speed AGV (Automotrice Grande Vitesse) systems, a concept designed to travel at 360 km/h.
In January 2018, the company applied for admission to Consob to be listed on the Milan Stock Exchange but a few days later withdrew the listing when it was sold to the American Global Infrastructure Partners for 1.98 billion euros. In May 2023, Italo announced the acquisition of Itabus, creating a new hub for rail-road transport in Italy.
