Graduated in Physics with a specialization in Cybernetics from the University of Milan, he began his professional career in software development while simultaneously starting his academic career: from 1978, for 18 years, he was at Etnoteam, which he left in 1996 as Director of the Systems Division. Gianluigi Vittorio Castelli moved to Infostrada in 1996, taking on the role of CIO. In 1997, he joined Fiat Auto as CIO. He coordinated the IT organizations of Fiat Auto in Brazil, Argentina, and Poland. In 2000, he became CEO and General Director of the Fiat Group's software services company (GSA). In 2001, Gianluigi Vittorio Castelli moved to Omnitel as CIO and a year later became CTO. In 2003, he relocated to the UK and became Global IT Director of Vodafone. In 2006, he returned to Italy and took the lead, as Executive Vice President ICT, of IT at Eni. He is also a board member of Eni AdFin. In 2015, he left Eni and founded the DEVO Lab within SDA Bocconi. Since 2016, he has been the Central Director of Innovation and Information Systems at Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane. From 2018 to 2021, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ferrovie dello Stato.
