Illycaffè is an Italian company specialized in the production of coffee based in Trieste.
It was founded in 1933 by Francesco Illy, an entrepreneur in the cocoa and coffee sector. Illycaffè produces and sells a blend made from nine varieties of 100% Coffea arabica, sourced from India, Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia, and Ethiopia.
The company is famous for the innovations it brought to the coffee market; the founder patented numerous inventions in various fields (from packaging to manufacturing), most notably the pressurization with nitrogen to preserve the aroma of coffee. Since the 1990s, the brand has been at the center of effective internationalization, leading to the collaboration with designer Matteo Thun for the production of cups (1992), the joint venture with Coca-Cola for the creation of a new product (2008), and the establishment of the first University of Coffee. In 2017, Illycaffè was the only Italian company to be included in the ranking of the "124 most ethical companies in the world" by Ethisphere.
