Italgas is an Italian company specialized in gas distribution, founded in 1837 in Turin under the name of Compagnia di Illuminazione a Gaz per la Città di Torino. Over the years, it changed its name several times, first becoming Società Italiana per il Gas, then Stige, and finally Italgas. In 1900, it was listed on the stock exchange for the first time.
The expansion of Italgas outside the Piedmont capital occurs due to the nationalist policy of the fascist government. In 1967, control of the company passes to the Eni Group. In the following years, Italgas focuses its "core business" on natural gas, expanding abroad through subsidiaries operating in Argentina, Brazil, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, and becoming an international group with over 10,000 employees. In 2003, Italgas ceases to be listed on the stock exchange, and in 2009, ownership passes to Snam. In 2016, the company is listed again after 13 years, in the FTSE MIB index of the Milan Stock Exchange.
