Born in Rome in 1943 into a family mainly composed of builders. During his studies at the Faculty of Engineering, he also undertakes the family construction business interrupted in the 1940s. In the mid-90s, Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone takes full control of the Caltagirone Group. In 1996, he acquires the Montedison group, the newspaper "Il Messaggero" of Rome, and the following year "Il Mattino" of Naples and "Il Corriere Adriatico" of Ancona. Since 2000, all new media activities have been grouped under Caltagirone Editore. In 2006, he also acquires the majority stake in "Il Gazzettino" of Venice. In 2006, he is appointed Knight of Labor and in the same year becomes vice president of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena. In 2007, Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone is appointed Councillor of Assicurazioni Generali, assuming the role of vice president in 2010. He is the father of three children: Francesco Jr, Alessandro, and Azzurra.
