IBM Italy is the branch of the American company IBM, the oldest and one of the largest in the world in the IT sector. It produces and markets hardware, software for computers, middleware, and IT services, offering infrastructures, hosting services, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and consulting in the IT and strategic sectors.
Its activities in Italy began in 1927, with the first Italian branch opening in 1928 in Milan. The company is led by Giulio Vuccino, who will be the general manager in Italy for 33 years.
In the following years, IBM Italy rapidly expands, opening new branches and facilities throughout the country. In 1965, the Vimercate facility begins production, definitively replacing the old facility on Via Tolmezzo in Milan.
In the 1980s, IBM Italy becomes a major player in the Italian IT market, employing over 12,500 people. In 1990, the company founded IBM SEMEA (Southern Europe, Middle East, and Africa), which takes responsibility for the company's activities in Italy and 40 other countries.
Throughout the 2000s, IBM Italy begins to downsize its operations in Italy, selling the Vimercate and Santa Palomba facilities. In 2016, the company announces a restructuring plan. As of 2023, IBM Italy employs about 3,400 people, with a presence in 18 Italian cities. The company is a major provider of IT solutions for businesses, public administrations, and institutions.
