Luxottica Group is an Italian company specialized in the production and trade of eyewear. It is present in over 150 countries across five continents and is the largest global manufacturer of frames for prescription glasses and sunglasses. The company was founded in Agordo in 1961 by Leonardo Del Vecchio.
Throughout its history, the company has distinguished itself through a wide range of acquisitions (notably that of the American brand Ray-Ban, a leader in the sunglasses sector previously owned by the multinational Bausch & Lomb). On March 24, 2014, Luxottica announced an agreement with Google for a new model of augmented reality glasses, a project revisited in 2023 with the Meta group.
In 2012, it was the first Italian company in the fashion sector by revenue. On January 16, 2017, the merger of Luxottica with the French group Essilor was announced. Since October 1, 2018, Luxottica Group S.p.A. has been a subsidiary of the holding EssilorLuxottica, which has held 100% of it since March 5, 2019.
The company was listed under the symbol LUX in the FTSE MIB index of the Milan Stock Exchange from 2000 to 2018.
