Enel S.p.A. (originally an acronym for National Agency for Work Energy) is an Italian multinational energy company, among the leading integrated global operators in the electricity and gas sectors. Established as a public entity at the end of 1962, it was transformed into a joint-stock company in 1992 and in 1999, following the liberalization of the electricity market in Italy, it was listed on the stock exchange. The Italian State, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance, remains its main shareholder (as of December 31, 2020, it owned 23.6% of the share capital).
It operates in over 30 countries, with a significant presence in Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. The group employs more than 65,000 people, with nearly 67 million customers worldwide and a net installed capacity of 90.1 GW.
Enel is the ninetieth company in the world by revenue with approximately 140.5 billion euros and a market capitalization of 54 billion euros. It is one of the top 10 stocks on the Italian Stock Exchange.
