Biography

Mario Melazzini is currently at the helm of ICS Maugeri S.p.A. Società Benefit as Chief Executive Officer. A physician specialized in Clinical and Laboratory General Hematology and a researcher in the field of onco-hematology, he is also active in the academic world and the author of numerous scientific publications and several books on his experience as a doctor and a patient. For Maugeri, he has also held the position of Central Scientific Director and director of IRCCS Pavia.
Originally from Pavia, he began his career as a contracted physician for the practice of General Medicine in the territorial area. After being appointed Chief Physician with responsibilities for organization, coordination, and management, he subsequently took on the role of Responsible Manager at the Central Coordination Unit of Occupational Medicine - Medical Center of Pavia - Via Maugeri from 1999 to 2002. The following year, he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
Mario Melazzini's professional journey continues with responsibilities in the healthcare sector. Among others, he is the national President of the Italian Association for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis - Aisla Onlus, President of Arisla - Italian Research Foundation for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (2007-2016), and National Secretary of FISH - Italian Federation for Overcoming Disability (2007-2012). In 2009, the Maugeri Foundation appointed him Director of the Medical Center in Milan, a role he held until 2011. These were intense years, during which he also combined significant experiences in Public Administration with his healthcare responsibilities. He served as Health Councillor in 2012, Councillor for Productive Activities, Research and Innovation, and, since 2015, Councillor for University, Research and Open Innovation. He was also a Member of the Technical Health Committee of the Ministry of Health. At the Ministry, he also served as President of the Ministerial Commission on Neuromuscular Diseases and a Member of the Working Group on Rehabilitation. In January 2016, he was appointed President of the Board of Directors of AIFA - Italian Medicines Agency, of which he became General Director on November 17, 2016, a position he held for two years. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of CNR - National Research Council and has been part of the Management Board of EMA (European Medicines Agency) and the Committee for Medical Products for Human Use (CHMP). Throughout his career, he has received prestigious awards such as the honor of Commander of the Order of "Merit of the Italian Republic" and the Ambrogino d'Oro from the Municipality of Milan.
