Laura Biagiotti

Laura Biagiotti

Laura Biagiotti was born in Rome in 1943. She studied Literature but worked from a very young age in her mother's textile company that produced high fashion clothes. Her passion has always been fashion: “Since I was a child, with the help of the seamstress who came to my house once a week, I made clothes for my dolls, often replicas of what I wore.” In 1965, she created her own women's collection, and in 1972 she presented her first fashion show: a success that earned her the title of "Queen of cashmere" in the New York Times. In 1988, in Beijing, the most significant creations of the designer's career were presented.

In 1992, in New York, Laura Biagiotti received the Woman of the Year award. Her perfume Roma, dedicated to the Eternal City, has been distributed worldwide since 1994. Since 1980, she has lived at the Marco di Simone Castle in Guidonia, a national monument from the 11th century, restored together with her husband Gianni Cigna. In 2013, she dressed the women's national tennis team for the Fed Cup, designing the official uniforms. She passed away in 2017 at the age of 73. Currently, the fashion house is managed by her daughter.

Women in the '60s used tailoring as if it were a psychologist's office.

Curiosities

“Queen of cashmere and white, a businesswoman happy to own her own brand.” It is said that Laura Biagiotti used to test the comfort of her garments on herself and her collaborators. “They said I was crazy when I thought of skirts with a drawstring at the waist because, you know, the body tightens and expands. I am pleased to have recovered some high-quality workmanship, such as felting, topstitching, and pleats.” When asked how she defines herself, she replies: “Designer? A word I don't like. But it's also wrong to say 'seamstress' because I was born with fashion that is bought ready-made. Perhaps there is no real word to define what I do, but this job suits me just as it is.”
