Mercitalia Rail is an Italian public company, part of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane group, that manages the freight transport service (conventional and combined) and logistics both in Italy and in Europe.

The company Mercitalia Rail, like the other operating companies of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane holding, can be classified as a public law entity.

It was founded in January 2017, when the Cargo division of Trenitalia was spun off from it. Mercitalia Rail has an important fleet of locomotives (about 300 electric, 60 diesel, and 180 shunting) and cars (13,000 cars, specialized by type of transportable goods).

With about 2000 trains per week, the company ensures connections between the main ports, interports, terminals, industrial connections, throughout the national territory and on international corridors, where it operates directly or in partnership with other operators.
