STMicroelectronics, also known as STM or simply ST, is an Italian-French company that produces semiconductor electronic components.
Founded in June 1987 from the merger of the Italian SGS Microelettronica and the French Thomson Semiconducteurs, it was renamed STMicroelectronics in May 1998 following the withdrawal of Thomson SA from its capital.
The group is one of the largest global producers of electronic components, primarily used in consumer electronics, automotive, computer peripherals, mobile telephony, and the industrial sector.
Over the years, the company has seen several acquisitions and the development and production of various technologies and electronic components applied in electrical engineering, computing, and electronics.
STMicroelectronics is a member of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute and is listed on the stock exchanges of Paris, New York, and Milan.
