Italian Railway Network (abbreviated as RFI) is a public company in the form of a joint-stock company with the function of managing the national railway infrastructure, fully owned by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane. Like the other companies in the FS group, it can be classified as a public law entity. Italian Railway Network is also included among the public administrations listed in the consolidated economic account of the Italian State.
RFI is established as a private law company that operates under a public concession regime through a temporary Concession Act, which will expire in 2060. In 2020, it was included by Istat among the Public Administrations.
The company has its own navigation division that operates the ferrying of trains across the Strait of Messina between the ports of Messina and Villa San Giovanni.
