Anas is an Italian joint-stock company that deals with road infrastructure and manages the network of state roads and national interest highways.
Founded in 1946 under the name of "Azienda Nazionale Autonoma delle Strade" (A.N.A.S.), this acronym has become a proper name with the transformation first into a public economic entity (1996) and subsequently into a joint-stock company (2002). Since January 2018, it has been part of the corporate group of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane.
Legally, the company is classified as a public law entity; within the framework of the European system of national and regional accounts, it is among the consolidated economic account companies of the Italian State.
Its responsibilities include the management of state-owned roads and highways, their ordinary and extraordinary maintenance, and the implementation of laws and regulations for the protection of road and highway assets.
