Acea, an acronym for Municipal Company for Energy and Environment, is a public Italian company holding a group active in the environmental (waste management), energy (production and distribution of electricity), and water sectors. The company's capital is divided in a public-private mix between Rome Capital, the majority shareholder, the French company SUEZ, and entrepreneur Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone, while part of the shares is allocated to the market through listing on the Italian Stock Exchange in the FTSE Italia Mid Cap index.
In the water sector, also through its subsidiaries, Acea is the main Italian operator with a user base of about 9 million inhabitants, mainly due to the management of the integrated water service in the optimal territorial areas (ATO) of Rome and Frosinone and in their respective metropolitan areas. Its activities are mainly concentrated in Lazio, Campania, Molise, Tuscany, and Umbria, as well as in some countries of South America including Honduras, Peru, and the Dominican Republic.
